7 Tips for Booking BC Parks Campsites That Actually Work

If you've tried to book a campsite at Garibaldi, Joffre Lakes, or Manning Park recently, you know how competitive it's become. Popular summer weekends can sell out in seconds. But there are strategies that work — here's what actually gets people sites.

1. Know the Exact Booking Window

BC Parks releases campsite reservations exactly 90 days (3 months) before the arrival date, at 7 AM Pacific Time.

Write down the date and time that your target dates become bookable. For a Canada Day weekend (July 1), that means being ready at 7 AM on April 1. For a mid-August weekend, it's mid-May.

Missing this window is the most common reason people end up without a site. Set a calendar reminder.

2. Create Your Discover Camping Account Early

Don't wait until the day you need to book. Create your account at discovercamping.ca well in advance — at least a few days before your target booking window opens.

Make sure:

  • Your account is verified and you can log in
  • Your credit card is saved in the system
  • Your vehicle information is entered

Scrambling to create an account at 6:58 AM on booking day is a recipe for missing the opening.

3. Research Your Target Campground in Advance

Know which specific sites you want before you start booking. Popular campgrounds at places like Garibaldi have some sites that are clearly better than others — sites with lake views, more privacy, or better sun exposure go first.

Look at campground maps on the BC Parks website. Read reviews on The Dyrt or Hipcamp. Have a ranked list of your top three site choices ready.

This prep can save 30-60 seconds on booking day — which can be the difference between getting your site and not.

4. Be Ready at 7 AM Sharp

For high-demand parks, have discovercamping.ca open, logged in, and with your search pre-filled before 7 AM. The moment the clock turns, execute your booking as fast as possible.

Some people use multiple devices (phone and laptop) simultaneously to increase speed. It sounds excessive, but at Garibaldi or Joffre Lakes, it can matter.

5. Be Flexible on Dates

If you have flexibility on when you go, this is your single biggest advantage.

Weekdays vs. weekends: Thursday and Friday arrivals (midweek stays) are dramatically less competitive than Saturday arrivals. A Thursday-Sunday trip at Garibaldi is far easier to book than a Friday-Sunday trip.

Shoulder season: Late June and early-to-mid September have noticeably better availability than July and August. The parks are still beautiful — often more beautiful — with fewer people.

Vary your target date range: If you're monitoring for cancellations, set alerts across a range of dates rather than one specific weekend. More flexibility means more opportunities.

6. Monitor for Cancellations

This is how most people get campsites at fully-booked parks — someone who booked in January changes their plans, and their site comes back into inventory.

The problem with manual monitoring is that cancellations happen at all hours. Someone might cancel their Garibaldi site at 11:30 PM on a Tuesday, and it could be gone before you check in the morning.

Campgetter checks BC Parks availability every 5 minutes, 24 hours a day. When a cancellation appears for your target park and dates, you get an instant email with a direct link to book. This works for any BC Parks campground.

Tips for cancellation monitoring:

  • Start monitoring as soon as possible — don't wait until a week before your trip
  • Monitor multiple campgrounds if you're flexible on location
  • Have your Discover Camping account ready to book the moment you get an alert

7. Have a Backup Plan

The most resilient approach is to have a primary target and a backup:

  • If Garibaldi is your first choice, also monitor Golden Ears or Porteau Cove
  • If Joffre Lakes is full, Duffey Lake is nearby and often has availability
  • Know a few first-come, first-served parks in your region for absolute last resorts

Not having a backup plan means a sold-out primary leaves you with nothing.

What Not to Do

A few common mistakes:

Don't assume you'll book the morning of: At popular parks, first-come, first-served doesn't exist during peak season. Everything is reserved.

Don't book speculatively and then cancel: The 20% cancellation fee is there for a reason. Only book what you're genuinely planning to use.

Don't give up because it looks fully booked: A fully booked campground on Discover Camping today might have cancellations by the end of the week.

The Reality of Popular BC Parks

The increased competition for BC Parks campsites reflects how many people want to experience these places. The parks themselves haven't changed — they're still extraordinary. The booking process has just become more competitive.

The strategies above genuinely work. They require preparation and sometimes patience, but they give you a real shot at even the most in-demand campgrounds in BC.
